Our Painting Prep

This is the process we follow at Professional Touch Painting, providing a final product we stand behind with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. Our quality work and attention to every little detail is exactly what has helped us earn customer referrals, and repeat clients.

Before we open a single can of paint there are some critical steps we must follow in order to achieve a durable and flawless finish that we can guarantee. If any one of the following steps is not thoroughly executed your painting investment will forever be compromised and your home or business space may also be jeopardized in the process.

  •  To protect our customers property, we first remove as much furniture and  other items as possible in our immediately working area. If a lack of room prevents removal of everything, we may then move as many items as possible into the middle of the room, then cover EVERYTHING with plastic.
  •  Next we cover all floors with butyl-backed drop cloths (water and solvent proof), which have only been used on interior painting projects helping to protect your floors from dirty drop cloths.
  •  Now that the floors and furniture are protected, we can remove all electrical cover plates, fans (if ceiling needs painting), light fixtures, towel racks etc., and any other item fastened to wall that must be removed. Anything we can not remove will be properly covered with plastic.
  •  The only thing left is to remove door hardware or mask with tape and paper/plastic (only if painting trim and doors), and  we also number doors and hardware to insure all parts return to original place (hinges can get switched and will throw the door off so much it won’t close properly or latch).
  • To ensure the Sheetrock mud bonds to the wall, and to make sure the primer and paint we apply later on will properly bond, we clean every square inch of every surface being painted and sand when dry and dust off .
  • This next step is very important, this is when we scrape around any cracks to remove any loose mud or tape, and then apply 1 coat of 45 minute Sheetrock mud over any  cracks, imperfections, holes, dented corners, nicked corners etc. Once mud is completely dry we will apply 1-2 more coats until blemish is no longer visible.
  • After all mud work on walls is finished, we’ll putty any imperfections on trim and doors, let dry, sand and reapply if needed.
  • Now we will dust all walls to allow paint to stick, and then caulk any trim or corners necessary (we also open windows and use a fan or vacuum to remove dust from house, depending on situation).
  • At this point all the repairs are finished, we just have to prime over any putty, Sheetrock mud, caulking we applied, as well as any water damage or other stains so the paint will stick. Priming new Sheetrock or mud, putty, caulking, and water damaged areas will make the consistency and texture, and even color and provide a smooth finish.
  • As soon as the primer is dry we must sand all the primed areas, followed by dusting all surfaces receiving fresh paint.
  •  At last were are ready to prep our materials, equipment, and it’s time to check that all flooring and furniture is still covered. All paint will be screened to remove chunks in paint, roller naps will be taped to remove any loose fibers (fibers show up in satin paints and can ruin a paint job), and we use high quality brushes, rollers, sprayers, applied by the most talented painters. We also only use top quality Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams products to provide our customers with the best possible finish.

We have perfected this process in the last 10 years with the help of our suppliers, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. All of our painters are required to follow these steps, and follow them in this order. If at any time these guidelines are not followed on the job site, the person in violation will no longer be employed by Professional Touch Painting. We are strict about the quality of our work and know the value of a good reputation, therefore we have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to Manufactures Recommendations.
